Workshops and Presentations

In April/May we welcome a visitor from Australia, Helen Walker, who has won a Churchill scholarship for a six week trip to the UK to study SPECAL.

We shall be providing a series of presentations and workshop sessions over this period.

Courses will be running between 25th March and the end of May.  If you are interested in attending a session please email info@specalburford.co.uk with your preferred dates and details of any sessions you have already attended.

We offer the following range of presentations and workshops. Click on titles for details. 

1: The SPECAL Photograph Album. A three hour introductory presentation.

2: The Follow-on day - putting the Photograph Album into practice. A full day workshop designed to put the theory into practice in your own home.

3: Carer's workshops. A range of useful workshops based around developing specific tools or troubleshooting particular issues relating to dementia care.

Introductory training presentations for Families and Friends. This presentation for family and friends is an introduction to SPECAL and a practical way of understanding the SPECAL approach. It is a constructive session offering immediate benefits by outlining positive actions that you can take in response to dementia.

The Presentation is £30 per person. For anyone who cannot afford the course fee, we have a number of subsidised places kindly funded by Help the Aged who have also supported us with a transport fund for those who need it. Please contact us if you would like more information about this scheme.

The FOLLOW-ON day -
Putting the Photograph Album© into practice

This all-day workshop is open to families who have previously attended the Photograph Album© presentation. The Follow-on Day provides a comprehensive overview of the way in which a SPECAL individualized care plan is designed and used by families at home enabling the person with dementia to enjoy an improved quality of life. The Follow-on Day is designed to provide vital information which will make a very real difference to a carers own life and transform the life of the person they care for.

The Follow-on Day cost is £80 per person and includes a light buffet lunch. Please advise us if you have any particular dietary requirements.

3: Workshops for carers

We offer a programme of individual workshops as part of a comprehensive Carer's Course, which are particularly suitable for family members living reasonably near the SPECAL Centre or able to travel to us. People who come to us from other parts of the country, or abroad, may prefer to book individual support sessions to which are provided on a one-to-one basis.

SPECAL’s Carer’s workshops are based on our extensive experience of working with people with dementia and their families, and related professionals. They provide understanding and a sense of control as well as a positive, constructive approach to dementia care.

The Workshop for carers costs £60 per person and includes a light buffet lunch. Please advise us if you have any particular dietary requirements.

Booking Information and Contact Details

Advance booking on all courses is essential. The Photograph Album should be attended first. The second course to attend is the Follow-on day. Other courses and individual sessions can be attended as you wish, as availability permits.

A note on charges
Courses and services run by SPECAL carry a charge and we rely on these charges to contribute towards the cost of running the services. However, there is scope for a reduction in certain cases, at the discretion of the charity and as our own funding situation allows. If you are interested in attending and are concerned about the costs involved, please do not be put off but contact us to discuss before making a booking.
